This white cotton shirt * is a family heritage item. The first time I wore this shirt was just before the death of my grandmother, who gave it to me for safekeeping. It was worn by women from my mother’s side for several generations. The dress was their daily civilizational skin, in which the history, intimate experiences, and events of the times in which they lived were directly and indirectly inscribed. The history of their temporal and spatial circumstances is partly known, but there is almost no knowledge of their individual or intimate histories. The shirt remains a silent witness. The shirt has lost its bodies and space in which it had defined function. Its context changes through time in which it resides. Since the ancient customs are widely extinct now, oral tradition is reduced to a small number of those who remember, and the role and position of women today have changed significantly. Wearing a dress/shirt like this on a daily basis would be in contrast with today’s hyper-consumerist attitude to clothing process, caring, and nurturing. Wearing a shirt like this today would evoke meaningful silence and an active void due to the inability of history to be consistently and continuously traced to its individual source.

Bijela pamučna košulja* je predmet porodičnog nasljeđa. Košulju sam prvi put obukla neposredno prije smrti bake koja mi je predala na čuvanje. Nosile su je žene nekoliko generacija po liniji moje majke. Haljina je bila njihova svakodnevna civilizacijska koža u koju je posredno i neposredno upisana istorija, intimni doživljaji i događaji vremena u kome su živjele. Istorija njihovih vremensko prostornih okolnosti je parcijalno poznata, individualne i intimne istorije skoro nikako. Košulja ostaje nijemi svjedok. Košulja je izgubila svoja tijela i prostor u kome je imala definisanu funkciju. Njen kontekst se mijenja u vremenu u kome traje. Budući da su se nekadašnji običaji većinom ugasili, usmeno prenošenje je svedeno na mali broj onih koji se sjećaju, a uloga i pozicija žene danas se bitno promijenila. Nošenje ovakve haljine/košulje svakodnevno, u kontrastu je sa današnjim hiper-potrošačkim odnosom prema odijevanju, čuvanju i njegovanju. Nošenje ovakve košulje danas, evocira sadržajnu tišinu i aktivnu prazninu usljed nemogućnosti da se istorija dosljedno i neprekinuto prati do njenog individualnog izvora.
